In tunnel construction, the utilization of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) materials is not just a common practice but a transformative one. GFRP bolts and rebars have been instrumental in the development of NATM tunnel faces and TBM tunnel soft-eyes. However, the true potential of these composite materials unfolds when they are integrated as permanent structural supports. By employing GFRP as permanent rebars in precast segments for mechanized tunnels and as enduring rockbolts in various tunnel and cavern constructions, we witness a paradigm shift. This innovative application paves the way for substantial reductions in reinforcement quantities and concrete lining thickness, heralding a new era of efficiency and sustainability in tunnel design. This presentation will showcase the remarkable benefits of GFRP in tunnel engineering through case studies. We will explore comparative analyses of material usage, cost-effectiveness, productivity enhancements, and most importantly, the reduction in embodied carbon, quantified through CO2 emissions metrics.
